The 4th annual Dumont Cup returns to Sunday River over March 23-24, 2012 bigger and better than ever.
This year, the Association of Freeskiing Professionals (AFP) announced that the Dumont Cup will be the first slopestyle event ever to be given a Platinum status, creating the highlest level of competition in the country for both amateur and professional skiers. The event will also be nationally televised this season, running on NBC Sports on April 10 from 12:30-1:30am as part of the Red Bull Signature Series.
The Dumont Cup is the biggest pro-am freeskiing event in the world, drawing competitors from across the US, Canada and Europe. This year's slopestyle course will be on the Sunday Punch and Rocking Chair trails on Barker Mountain once again for prime visibility and spectating, with Simon designing the course himself with the support of Sunday River's terrain park team. With $20,000 in cash up for grabs you'll see top X Games pros working to hold their own against an amateur field that gets better and better every season. In the last two years alone, former amateurs Alex Schlopy and Nick Goepper took home the coveted Dumont Cup and used their wins a launching pads for their current high profile professional careers.
Qualifying rounds will be held in two sessions on Friday, March 23 from 10am to 4:30pm, with the top 40 amateurs advancing to the semi-finals on Saturday morning. During the semi-finals and finals, professional and amateur skiers compete side-by-side.
